Big and Bold of Argentina
Argentina has played a major roll in what people are drinking over the last few years, offering terrific wines with modest prices. The trend is only growing, with more quality producers and brands entering the US each year. Many South American wineries and farmers are bringing in high profile consultants from Europe like Michel Roland, or are already working with stars from the US like Paul Hobbs of Napa/Sonoma, to further develop their "house style", efficiency and level of quality. With a well established viticulture system in Argentina, the older vineyards are producing world class Bordeaux style reds, featuring beautiful Cabernet Sauvignon and their prized varietal Malbec, which has reached heights not seen anywhere else in the world. The Classic producers like Bodega Luigi Bosca, founded in 1901 by Familia Arizu, are mainstays in Argentina, much like Mondavi and BV are here in the states, and are now becoming staples on the American dinner table as well. The deeply fruited, big and savory reds of Argentina offer lots of bang for the buck, especially in the $7-25 range. The rich blue and black fruits, mixed with the dark, smoky and enticing aromas of Malbec, scream for some grilled beef, giving tribute to the charcoal fired "asado" you would enjoy if you journeyed to Mendoza for the real thing. The whites of Argentina have also given us a nice group of choices, featuring clean and fresh wines, filled with fruit, like un-oaked Chardonnays, Sauvignon Blancs and Mendoza's most famous white, Torrontes. Torrontes is a flowery, crisp and sometimes fruity wine that is excellent with summer seafood like, grilled shrimp and white fish with fruit salsa. The world's wine press has been doing a lot of writing in regards to Argentina over the last decade, due to the explosion of popularity from this great wine producing country, and for good reason.
