70% Cabernet Sauvignon & 30% Syrah. The fruit is harvested not based simply on its sugar content, but on the potential of its tannin structure to provide both drinkability and longevity. Grapes are picked in the cool of the morning, soaked on their skins after crushing, then allowed to develop into a long, slow fermentation utilizing naturally available yeast to enhance complexity. The wines are finished with cultivated yeast to ensure dryness and stability. Aged 10-14 months in French oak, 65% of new. In the summer after harvest, a trial blend of the best barrels of Cabernet and Syrah is created and then returned to barrel to marry the flavors—depth and power from the Cabernet and an inviting fleshiness from the Syrah. The wine comes back together in tank before bottling to complete the integration and allow for final fine-tuning.

The Hope family planted wine grapes in Paso Robles in 1978. They were among a handful of pioneering families who helped to shape and gain recognition for this distinctive winegrowing region. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc were the varieties first planted by the Hopes. They worked with terrains in distinctly different vineyard sites both east and west of the Salinas River. Initially, demand for their grapes came primarily from wineries outside of Paso Robles, including Napa Valley. In the early 1990’s, the family began producing estate wines under the Hope Family Farms label. At this time, they focused their farming efforts to better suit the Paso Robles terroir and eliminated their white grape plantings entirely. Instead, they opted to source Chardonnay and white Rhone varieties from the cooler climates of Monterey County. It had become abundantly clear to them that Paso Robles was capable of producing bold red wines that could compete in the international arena.

The Hopes established Treana Winery in 1996. Today, third-generation farmer Austin Hope is at the helm as director of winemaking and viticulture for the flagship brand. He remains uncompromising in his pursuit of wines of exceptional quality that specifically reflect their growing regions.
