German

Germany is one of the world’s top 10 wines producers with nearly two-thirds of its production being white wine. The best wine regions lie in its southwest near the French border. They are the Mosel, the Rheingau, the Pfalz, the Nahe and Rheinhessen. Other fine regions are Franken, Baden-Württenberg and the Ahr.

Germany’s signature white grape is Riesling, one of the world’s greatest grapes capable of long-ageing, showing its terroir and compatible with noble rot. Riesling is produced in a variety of styles from dry (trocken) to very sweet (Beerenauslase, Trockenbeerenauslese and Eiswein). In between are basic Riesling (Qba) as well as Kabinett, Spätlese,and Auslese. These go great with (spicy) Asian foods, blue cheeses and smoked fish.

Other major white grapes are Sylvaner, Müller-Thürgau, Pinot Blanc (Weißburgunder). The major red grapes are Pinot Noir (called Spätburgunder or Blauburgunder), Dornfelder and Portuguieser.
