Austria

Austria is one of the most important wine producers in Europe, although among the least known. Most of the production is within an area East of Linz to the border with Hungary and Slovakia. The country boasts many great wine regions but the Wachau, its westernmost region, may be its finest. Other fine regions nearby are Kamptal and Kremstal. North of Vienna is the Weinviertal, a source of delicious, inexpensive wine. Southeast of Vienna is the Neusiedlersee, near the Hungarian border, where world-class dessert wines are produced.

Austria’s top white grapes are Grüner and Riesling. The former is one of the most versatile food whites anywhere. Austrian Riesling is usually dry with a lovely mineral component.

Austria’s top reds are Blaufränkisch, Sankt Laurent, Zweigelt, and Pinot Noir. Blaufränkisch is a versatile red which is great with grilled meats and barbeque. Sankt Laurent bears a resemblance to Pinot Noir and Zweigelt is a crossing of Sankt Laurent and Blaufränkisch.
