The mild winter allowed the vines to remain in good shape throughout the cold months.
In May, one to two weeks before bloom, temperatures spiked to 100 degrees for about a week.
The heat spike led to a smaller canopy which allowed for more light penetration, and contributed to good flavor development in the fruit. The hot temperatures also contributed to smaller berries with concentrated flavors.
During fruit set the weather conditions were favorable and the summer saw mild to average temperatures.
Veraison started 10 days ahead of average. At the beginning of harvest, temperatures were moderate and weather was ideal for harvest.

1978-Vineyards are planted at a rate of 500 acres per year in Paterson, Washington

1979-Seattle's Howard S. Wright, Inc. drafts design plans for a country-themed French manor house winery. Ninety percent of the winemaking facility will be housed underground to maintain year-round temperature and humidity control.

1983-The winery and visitor center is officially dedicated and opened in June.

The BATF grants official AVA status to Washington's Columbia Valley. The first vintage of Columbia Valley Merlot is produced.

1987-First release of white varietal wines from the 1986 vintage.

1988-First release of red varietal wines from the 1984 vintage.

2009-Wine Spectator selects the 95-point rated 2005 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon as the # 1 Wine of the year.
